Mont Saint-Michel in France

This is my drawing of ‘Mont Saint-Michel’. It took me about an hour and a half to create one warm and sunny afternoon in France. I’d travelled there on my Vespa from London. It was a good trip. Food on the island was pretty poor which is unlike the rest of France.

Mont Saint-Michel is an island commune in Normandy, France. It is located approximately one kilometre (0.6 miles) off the country’s northwestern coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches. 247 acres in size, the island has a population of 44 ( as of 2009). The island has held strategic fortifications since ancient times, and since the eighth century AD has been the seat of the monastery from which it draws its name. The structural composition of the town exemplifies the feudal society that constructed it. On top God, the abbey and monastery, below this the Great halls, then stores and housing, and at the bottom, outside the walls, fishermen and farmers’ housing. It is one of France’s most recognisable landmarks and its bay are part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

More than 3 million people visit each year. Half of them stopped to watch me do this drawing. This drawing, and others, is available to buy as a signed giclée print via my website.

St Peter’s Basilica in Rome

This is my drawing of ‘St Peter’s Basilica’. It took me about an hour and a half to create one warm and sunny afternoon in Rome. Lots of people stopped to watch the drawing in progress. In the early 4th century, Emperor Constantine, the first Christian emperor of Rome, ordered to build a basilica on Vatican Hill. The location was symbolic: this was the place where Saint Peter, the chief apostle, was buried in 64 AD. A small shrine already existed on the site but it was now replaced by a large church building. The new basilica, consecrated in 326 AD, was completed around 349 AD. This drawing was completed late 2012 AD.

This drawing is available to buy as a signed giclée print, along with others, via my website – there is a ‘Black & White’ version for purists and a ‘Vatican Purple’ version for Catholic priests.
